Listen now to a very special BEHIND THE LENS today with two passionate filmmakers – writer/director/actor JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON and director MARK PELLINGTON – each with a film laced with different degrees of poignancy and reflection.
Already awarded Best Director in advance of the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival and the West Coast premiere of his directorial feature on Wednesday, February 21, JEFFREY JOHNSON joins us live at the top of the show talking his journey from actor to director and the “making of” CAPTAIN BLACK. A film with solid character construction, a very likeable protagonist, witty dialogue, but some heavier themes, you’ll hear Jeffrey talk about the graphic novel approach to the character of Captain Black and taking him through development as a super-hero in comic form to alter ego as a human to dream state, all within the confines of the film. Plus, Jeffrey talks production values and working with his cinematographer, editor, and other cinematic artisans.
And at the midpoint of the show, we’ve got director MARK PELLINGTON talking about his latest film, NOSTALGIA (NOSTALGIA MOVIE). Originally slated to join us live, Mark headed back East over the weekend to start work on a television pilot during the time BTLRadioShow is airing, so out of an abundance of caution, we sat down for a very candid and personal interview before his departure. Talking about not only the themes of grief, loss, identity, legacy and the value we place on memories and mortality, Mark takes on the journey of emotionally developing NOSTALGIA, along with the technical elements of cinematography, his love of drones, editing, and – dare we say it with a Mark Pellington film – minimal use of music.
